Orion Innovations Highlights Improved Patient Safety Study Results for Veteran Patients Through Partnership with VHSS

The collaboration and recent trial at a major VA Hospital underscores the numerous benefits of the MedLite ID Smart-Lite solution to veteran acute care patients nationwide

Saint George, UT and Jacksonville, FL – November 12, 2024 – Orion Innovations, a patient safety technology platform company, today highlighted successful study results at a major U.S. Veterans Affairs (VA) acute facility in partnership with Veterans Healthcare Supply Solutions (VHSS), which distributes the MedLite ID Smart-Lite solution to VA and DoD healthcare facilities. Sponsored by Orion Innovations and conducted at a Houston-based VA Hospital, the study represents a significant evidence-based milestone for MedLite ID, which identifies and illuminates the intermittent drug Keep Vein Open (KVO) infusion line in seconds and is designed to prevent hospital wrong-route infusion line-tracing errors known as Adverse Drug Events (ADEs). MedLite ID, an eight-time patented innovation, attaches to any commonly used hospital IV line in seconds, which provides a simple standardization method of infusion line identification and tracing – one of the most frequently performed procedures by hospital nurses.

The four-month study at the 500-patient-bed VA Hospital evaluated the level of improvement in the time to access a patient’s medication port – taking care to follow the INS requirements for the prevention of infusion ADEs. Conducted with a month of baseline standard of care, followed by three months of on-patient trial within three specialized intensive care departments, the results showed significant improvements in time to access the medication port when using MedLite ID compared to the standard of care. Normalized for number of lines per patient, MedLite ID Smart-Lites improved the time to injection readiness by over 400 percent. Standard of care took between 19 to 58 seconds to reach the port as compared to MedLite, which took only 1 to 7 seconds. Combined with the ability to use this in all lighting conditions, which creates a simplified method to meet the required mandate by the Infusion Nursing Society for line identification, MedLite ID has established itself as a patient safety solution demanded by nurses for its simplicity in application.

“We are honored to be able to help support the care of our veterans across the country,” said Rodney Schutt, President & CEO of Orion Innovations. “These patients have earned the right to the highest standard of care, and we’re happy that VHSS has selected MedLite ID to deliver this critical care to them. In addition, our recent research study shows the vast advancements are possible in fighting ADEs, and we hope to bring to more and more hospitals worldwide.”

VHSS, a veteran-driven medical product distribution company that represents manufacturers to federal government agencies, has played a critical role in increasing the availability of the MedLite system. Often described as a medical “seatbelt” – MedLite ID prevents drug-to-drug head-on collisions by helping to avoid infusion-related errors with a near-zero change in workflow. Taking only 60 seconds to attach, the solution reduces the risk for ‘infusion confusion’ in today’s acute care settings by seamlessly replacing the current method of using tape and labels for line identification, which are time-intensive to apply and plagued by handwriting and poor adherence issues.

“VHSS has supported Orion Innovations through its lifecycle of development, and we are enthusiastic about our relationship,” said Ryan Hurt, CEO of VHSS. “The safety measures afforded by this technology will benefit the veteran and warfighter patient population measurably. We are excited that clinical studies are quickly establishing MedLite ID as a safety standard and enhanced quality of care."

As patients move through different departments during their hospital stay, MedLite ID’s simple safety standards prevent ADEs and disease exposure. Preventing ADEs at hospitals continues to be a critical battle, as 56 percent of all ADEs are infusion-related and 26 percent are life-threatening with 15 percent of these being "wrong route errors.” As staffing continues to be an issue, especially at VA hospitals, the growth in efficiency that MedLite ID provides offers a valuable tool to nurses and critical care providers while enhancing care for veterans in acute care facilities nationwide.
